Coast to Coast Crossing of Devon

What an amazing first half of this year. I have really enjoyed completing coast to coast expeditions of Baffin Island and Greenland. It has been extremely hard work organizing and the logistics, finding the funding and not to mention actually being away on the expeditions themselves. However both have been highly successful and extremely rewarding.

Whilst I was away you find yourself pondering life as your skiing along, even in a team the days tend to be very lonely as you ski along one behind another, following the same trail. People always ask “what do you think about?” The next expedition. I am off back out to Baffin Island for August filming my summer project of ‘Life in the Arctic’, but what could I do before then.

A coast to coast crossing of Devon is something I have always wanted to do, especially as the route starts in my home village of Wembury, outside Plymouth. Following the Erm Valley Trail and then the Two Moors Way, its about 120 miles to the north coast. Devon is my home and I would love to be able to give something back.

Devon was voted England’s Best County 2009 by Country Life magazine. Amongst the top categories were Green, measured by factors such as levels of recycling and the ecological footprint, and Local Food, judged by range of farm shops, producers etc.

Sustainable tourism is an important factor in Devon, a county proud of its rich green landscape and fertile soil. Many businesses partake in green tourism schemes such as Green Tourism Business Scheme and David Bellamy Award, and visitors and Devonians alike take real care to look after and respect the beautiful natural environment that surrounds them.

With so much on offer in Devon –a truly unique county – 2 coastlines (over 250+ miles), 2 National Parks, 2 cities, World Heritage sites, Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and a variety of quality accommodation, attractions and activities, world-class events and expertly prepared food & drink from the rich Devon larder, there’s so much to show off about and we should all be shouting about it!

So I have decided to to use this expedition to highlight what Devon has to offer for tourism, promoting sustainable tourism and environmental issues within the county. I plan to have a number of guests who will join up with me along the route for interviews and help promote the project.

I am really looking forward to this project and promoting what Devon has to offer, if you would like to make a donation to this fundraising event please use the donation button on the main homepage.
