“You have set the bar very high for the remaining speakers in our programme this year and I am sure that as a result of your talk, we, the Plympton Rotary Club will look to help support your future endeavours. In a short space of time you managed to inform, educate and entertain us in what was one of the (if not THE) best talks we have had at our Rotary club.”
“The future of the human race depends on educating our next generations on environmental awareness”
You can help me achieve this and at the same time do your bit to help protect our fragile planet. Humankind needs to learn that we need to live in a more sustainable manner, it isn’t good enough to just recycle we need to change to using eco friendly products
The run up to the Christmas period was a very busy time indeed. December saw the finalization of my partnership with Plymouth University and the moving into new offices on the university campus. The University of Plymouth, ‘the’ enterprise university, is a dynamic and ambitious institution of which I am proud to have been given the opportunity to be a part.
I am delighted to announce that the ski to the North Pole Weekend was a huge success. We managed to ski the distance to the pole and raised over £2,500 for the Drake Foundation which is matched funded by the government, so thats £5,000 to the charity which will help to support local community projects within the city. Thank you for everyones support.
On the 30th October to the 1st November it is with great pleasure to announce a fantastic fundraising event right in the city centre of Plymouth. In the Drake Circus Shopping Mall we aim to ski the full distance of a North Pole Expedition .. in 3 days. It will be a huge challenge taking place on cross training exercise machines, which will need as much support as possible. Come and join in, take part or just come along to give some support.
My talk will focus on my school out reach project, “Education through Expedition”. I use expeditions to report credible eye witness account of the world around use directly into the classroom. I employ the technology so that students as young as 5 years old can ask questions directly to my satellite phone, I can then reply via sending blog and pictures back through to the classroom via my website. This helps make the classroom and fun and inspirational learning environment. My past 3 year project has been focusing on the Inuit people on Baffin Island, my solo winter arctic expeditions and my summer projects where I take students out on arctic fieldwork trips. My message is simple;
“The future of the human race depends on educating our next generations on environmental awareness” and “Dare to dream, believe and you will succeed”
I am extremely excited by our first few meetings and find Lee’s ideas and enthusiasm truly inspiring. It is great to find people who share the same drive and determination to succeed in Plymouth. I really look forward to working with Lee and producing our first range of T-Shirts.
I am pleased to announce the winners of the Baffin Island 2009 Expedition Raffle. It was a fantastic raffle which helped raise much needed funds to carry on with my school outreach project. I am completely non-profit and do not charge schools for my talks, this I strongly believe in as not all schools can afford to pay hundreds of pounds for guest speakers.
Wednesday 11th February saw the official launch of my School Outreach Project with a small diner party at the Fish Market Restaurant in Plymouth. This was my first fundraising event that I have organized and I must admit that I was very nervous about how it would turn out.
On monday the 9th February on a very cold wet morning I arrived at BBC Radio Devon’s studio in Plymouth for my first live radio interview. The interview was with Gordon Sparks who wakes up the city of Plymouth each weekday morning. A great experience and one I am looking forward to repeating this wednesday(18th) at 14.30 on BBC Radio Devon.
I am very proud and excited to officially announce the start of my School Outreach Project. With less than a month to go now things are in full swing finalizing equipment testing, route planning and packing. This will be my third expedition to Baffin Island and I am very excited to have this return trip as my first official case study project.
