School Outreach in Full Swing

It has been a very busy and rewarding year this year out on the expedition trail, completing no less than 5 expeditions including 4 in the arctic. Thats almost 5 months of this year sleeping inside a tent but what an adventure.

Since I have been back I have been busy continuing my outreach work, in order to help share my experiences in the arctic with school children and the public in general. Upon arrival back in the UK, I quickly headed down into Cornwall to give a talk on the difference in arctic seasons at “The Eden Project”:http://www.edenproject.com/.

The Eden Project is a fantastic site, taking people on a journey that celebrates the value of plants to humankind whilst inspiring people to sustain the things that sustain us. The site consists of great big bio domes of different habitats from around the world and a must see for any visitor to the Southwest.

I was delighted that the entire theatre was filled, with many people also sitting on the floor to hear my account of life on Baffin Island. I am also very pleased to say that this will not be a one off at the Eden Project but will be the first of a series of talks to come. More news will follow.

This week has also been the start of my school visits, starting with “Budmouth Technology College”:http://www.budmouth.dorset.sch.uk/ at Weymouth. I gave a talk to both Year 11 and Year 9 students as part of their development day with a strong emphasis on the fact that “whatever you will be tomorrow, you are becoming today”. The talk was aimed to inspire the students to work hard at school and not to be scared to dream and importantly to succeed.

It was a pleasure to have been given the opportunity to talk at Budmouth and I was delighted to have so many questions from the students during their break time coupled with their keenness to learn more. We also discussed the option to extend my educational outreach work, and a future link with “Budmouth Technical College”:http://www.budmouth.dorset.sch.uk through links with the colleges science clubs and my interactive expeditions. Watch this space!

Next week will see talks at “Woodlands Special School”:http://www.woodlands.plymouth.sch.uk/ and at the “All Our Futures Conference”:http://csf.plymouth.ac.uk/allourfutures/ at Plymouth University. If you would like a talk at your school, college, university or even your place of work, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. It is always a pleasure to share my experiences in the arctic.

I am also discussing the possibility of developing free resources for schools and my outreach work. This I would develop to co-inside with the national curriculum and a new website I am looking to develop as a online resource. A lot of my work relies on volunteers and peoples generosity, if you can help in anyway or would like to make a donation towards my work please do get in touch. Thank you ever so much.
